PURC Announces New Electricity and Water Tariffs Effective January 1, 2026

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has approved new electricity and water tariffs to take effect from January 1, 2026, as part of its 2026–2030 multi-year tariff framework.

Under the revised structure, electricity tariffs will go up by 9.86 percent for all consumer categories, while water tariffs are expected to rise by 15.92 percent over the five-year period.

According to the Commission, the adjustments are critical to meeting the investment needs of utility companies, strengthening industry competitiveness, and protecting consumers in the long term. PURC explained that the new framework also maintains its quarterly tariff review mechanism, which cushions utilities against external factors such as currency depreciation, inflation, fuel price changes, and shifts in the power generation mix.

As part of the reforms, PURC has introduced mini-grid tariffs aimed at boosting electricity access in island and remote communities. The cost of these mini-grid operations has been incorporated into the revenue requirements of the Volta River Authority (VRA).

The Commission noted that the tariff decisions were reached after extensive engagements, including stakeholder consultations, public hearings, and a thorough assessment of proposals submitted by the utility providers.

PURC assured the public that it will continue to closely supervise utility companies to ensure operational efficiency, value for money, and strict compliance with regulatory standards.
