Amplifier Thief Jailed Two Years

The Bekwai Circuit Court has sentenced a 26-year-old driver, Kofi Nti, popularly known as Agoogo, to two years’ imprisonment for stealing five sound amplifiers and a can of emulsion paint worth GH¢3,300.

The convict pleaded guilty to charges of unlawful entry and stealing and was convicted on his own plea by the court presided over by His Honour Isaac Apietu.

Detective Inspector Eric Okyere, who prosecuted the case, told the court that the complainant, Sarkodie Eric, a driver and vulcanizer, and the accused are neighbours living at Adagya in the Ashanti Region.

According to the prosecution, on August 14, 2026, at about 1:10 a.m., the accused unlawfully entered the complainant’s residence after noticing that the exit door had not been locked.

The court heard that Kofi Nti made away with five sound amplifiers valued at GH¢2,800 and a can of Top Coat emulsion paint worth GH¢500, bringing the total value of the stolen items to GH¢3,300.

After committing the theft, he reportedly concealed the items in his room.

The complainant later discovered the theft and alerted neighbours in the community.

Investigations revealed that the accused sold four of the stolen amplifiers to a scrap dealer, Rashid Abdul Rahim, for only GH¢140.

Luck, however, ran out on him when the complainant received information about the whereabouts of the amplifiers and identified them in the possession of the scrap dealer.

Police investigations subsequently led officers to the accused’s residence, where he was found hiding under a mattress.

The prosecution disclosed that the accused attempted to flee and resisted arrest but was overpowered by the police.

During investigations, Kofi Nti admitted to the offence and led officers to retrieve another amplifier hidden on the ceiling of his room and the stolen paint.

He further demonstrated to investigators how he gained access to the complainant’s residence.

In his caution statement, the accused admitted stealing the items, claiming he needed money to cater for the medical expenses of his pregnant wife.

Following his guilty plea, the court convicted him and sentenced him to two years in prison.

The scrap dealer who purchased the stolen amplifiers was later discharged after police investigations established that he was not directly connected to the theft.
