Rising Indiscipline Among Youth Threatens Job Creation — Businessman Warns

Business mogul and CEO of Yaw Fosu Enterprise in Obuasi, Mr. Yaw Fosu, has raised serious concerns about the increasing levels of indiscipline and poor work ethic among some Ghanaian youth, warning that the trend poses a major threat to job creation in the country.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Swiftnews3 Online, Mr. Fosu stressed that the behaviour and attitude of many young workers have become a major discouragement to employers who are willing to expand their businesses.

“One major issue in our country is the indiscipline and unscrupulous behaviour of some youth when they are employed. This makes it difficult for employers to create more job opportunities,” he said.

He cautioned that unless young people consciously change their mindset and improve their commitment to work, Ghana will continue to experience challenges in generating employment for the growing population.

Touching on the current economic environment, Mr. Fosu noted that although there have not been drastic changes, the recent depreciation of the dollar has offered some relief to traders.

“There hasn’t been any massive difference after the change, but the depreciation of the dollar has helped us purchase more with even a little cedi,” he explained.

He added that some traders have refused to reduce the prices of goods they stocked before the dollar’s depreciation, opting to maintain prices until the old stock is cleared.

Mr. Fosu also reiterated that job creation should not be seen as the sole responsibility of government.

“It’s not easy for government to create job opportunities. Even in developed countries, it is individuals who create more jobs for the youth,” he said.

However, he lamented that the fear of criminal attacks and the lack of effective law enforcement continue to discourage business owners from expanding or investing in new ventures.

According to him, reporting criminal activities often yields no meaningful outcome, a situation he described as frustrating for the business community.

“The leaders of the country must be spoken to because they do not penalize the youth who are reported or caught engaging in criminal acts. Individuals cannot take the law into their own hands, but when they report offenders, they are tossed around without seeing any positive results,” he lamented.

Mr. Fosu emphasized that a firm and consistent application of the law is crucial in creating an environment that encourages both local and foreign investment.

“The law must deal with unscrupulous acts as it should. This will motivate citizens and even those abroad to establish more businesses and create jobs,” he concluded.
