The Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has expressed deep concern and solidarity with journalists who were involved in an accident while covering an official assignment on illegal mining activities in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA).
In a statement signed by the Regional Chairman, Mr. Kofi Adu Domfeh, the Association said it stood firmly with the affected journalists, their families, and their respective media organizations during this difficult period.
The victims of the accident have been identified as Ibrahim Abubakar of TV3, Doris Lonta of Channel One, Akwasi Adomako of JoyNews, Nana Yaw Gyimah of JoyNews, and Joseph Obeng of AdomNews.
“The safety, welfare, and protection of journalists remain paramount to the GJA, and this unfortunate incident underscores the inherent risks associated with the critical work our members undertake in pursuit of the public interest, especially on issues related to galamsey,” the statement said.
The regional leadership of the Association assured that it was engaging relevant authorities and partners to ensure that all affected journalists receive the needed medical attention and emotional support.
Mr. Domfeh emphasized the need for greater attention to journalists’ safety during field assignments, particularly in high-risk areas such as illegal mining sites.
“As journalists continue to play their watchdog role in bringing national attention to environmental and social challenges, it is imperative that their safety is given topmost priority,” he stressed.
The GJA also urged all institutions that engage the media in field operations to strictly adhere to safety protocols and ensure proper coordination and preparedness at all times.
The Association reaffirmed its commitment to supporting affected members through these trying times and reiterated its resolve to advocate for safer working conditions for journalists across the region.
