LPG Warns Against Third-Term Agenda

The Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) has issued a strong warning against any attempt to pursue a third presidential term, insisting that Ghana’s Constitution clearly limits a president to two terms in office.

In a press statement released yesterday, the party said any move or suggestion to extend the constitutional tenure of President John Dramani Mahama beyond the provisions of the 1992 Constitution would undermine the country’s democratic credentials and erode public confidence in state institutions.

Signed by the party’s General Secretary, Jerry Owusu Appauh, the statement stressed that Ghana’s democracy has thrived for decades because of its commitment to constitutionalism, the rule of law and respect for presidential term limits.

“The Constitution is unequivocal regarding presidential tenure,” the party stated, adding that any attempt to pursue a third presidential term outside the constitutional framework would raise serious constitutional concerns.

The LPG maintained that no individual is above the Constitution, stressing that the country’s democratic strength lies in the collective resolve of its leaders and citizens to respect the limits established by law.

The party therefore called on Ghanaians, civil society organisations and democratic institutions to remain vigilant in protecting the Constitution and ensuring that constitutional governance prevails.

It further urged political leaders to uphold democratic values, respect the rule of law and safeguard the peace, stability and unity Ghana has enjoyed over the years.

The statement comes amid growing public discussions over constitutional governance and the need to preserve Ghana’s democratic traditions.
