Kotoko Name Eric Tinkler As New Head Coach

Asante Kotoko Sporting Club have appointed experienced Portuguese-South African coach, Eric Tinkler, as their new Head Coach with immediate effect.

The Porcupine Warriors announced the appointment on Friday, as the club moves to strengthen its technical team ahead of upcoming domestic and continental assignments.

Tinkler joins Kotoko with over three decades of experience in elite football, having built a reputation as a tactically disciplined coach with expertise in player development and team building.

The former South Africa national team captain holds a CAF A Licence and has managed some of the biggest clubs in South Africa, including Cape Town City FC, SuperSport United, Maritzburg United, Orlando Pirates and Bidvest Wits FC.

During his coaching career, Tinkler guided Orlando Pirates to the final of the CAF Champions League and also led SuperSport United to the CAF Confederation Cup final. He has also won major domestic trophies, including the MTN 8 and Telkom Knockout Cup.

Before moving into coaching, Tinkler enjoyed a successful playing career, earning 48 caps for Bafana Bafana and captaining the national team at the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations. He was part of the South African squad that won the 1996 AFCON title and featured at the 1998 FIFA World Cup.

At club level, the former midfielder played in Europe for teams including Barnsley FC in England, Cagliari in Italy and Vitória de Setúbal in Portugal.

Kotoko described Tinkler as a coach with a structured football philosophy, strong tactical understanding and a proven ability to nurture talents.

The new coach is expected to work closely with the club’s Director of Football, Stanley Menzo Purl, as the Reds aim to build a competitive side capable of challenging for honours locally and on the African continent.

Executive Chairman of Asante Kotoko, James Osei Brown, expressed confidence in the appointment, saying Tinkler’s experience, discipline and player development record made him the right choice to lead the club.

Tinkler, on his part, said he was delighted to join one of Africa’s most decorated clubs and pledged to work with players, technical staff and management to achieve success.

“I am honoured and excited to join one of Africa’s most storied football institutions. Asante Kotoko’s rich history, passion for success and ambition for development are well known across the continent,” he said.

He added that he looked forward to building a team capable of competing and winning both domestic and continental titles.

The appointment marks a new chapter for the Kumasi-based giants, who are hoping the experienced tactician can restore the club’s dominance and bring more glory to the Porcupine Warriors.
