Okumkom Leads Flood Clean-Up Exercise
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Atwima Nwabiagya South, Hon. Wisdom Osei Boamah, popularly known as Okumkom, has led a massive clean-up exercise at Abuakwa and its surrounding communities as part of President John Dramani Mahama’s national sanitation initiative following the recent floods that caused widespread destruction across parts of the country.
The exercise focused on flood-prone areas to improve sanitation, clear choked drains and prevent future flooding.
Speaking to the media after the exercise, Hon. Osei Boamah expressed his appreciation to his colleague Municipal Chief Executives who joined him to undertake the exercise. They included the MCE for Wenchi Municipal, Hon. Gloria Opoku Gyamfi, and the MCE for Jaman South Municipal, Hon. Siata Watara.
He also commended officials of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), staff of the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipal Assembly, market women and residents for their active participation in the exercise.
The MCE directed NADMO officials and the Municipal Environmental Health and Sanitation Department to undertake regular inspections of markets and other public places to ensure strict compliance with sanitation regulations.
He stressed that the Assembly would intensify the enforcement of its sanitation by-laws to keep the municipality clean. According to him, about 30 people who failed to participate in the clean-up exercise and were found to have accumulated refuse in their surroundings have been summoned and will face the appropriate sanctions to deter others from engaging in similar acts.
The MCE for Wenchi Municipal, Hon. Gloria Opoku Gyamfi, also appealed to traditional authorities to support the fight against poor sanitation by refraining from intervening on behalf of sanitation offenders.
She urged chiefs and community leaders to allow offenders to face the prescribed punishments to encourage respect for the law. She further appealed to residents to cultivate the habit of keeping their surroundings, particularly open spaces and public areas, clean at all times.
