VIDEOS: Ashanti Culture in Full Display as Day Two of Asantehemaa’s Funeral Draws Thousands

The Manhyia Palace in Kumasi was once again the center of attention on Tuesday, September 16, as the second day of the funeral rites for the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, unfolded with grandeur and deep tradition.

Chiefs and queen mothers from across the Ashanti Kingdom poured into the palace grounds in colorful processions, each entourage distinguished by cultural pageantry. Some were welcomed with Adowa and Kete performances, while others were accompanied by the booming rhythms of Fontomfrom drums. The sight drew admiration from the thousands of mourners who had converged to witness the richness of Ashanti heritage.

In keeping with mourning customs, women wore black and red without earrings or necklaces, symbolizing the collective grief of Asanteman for their departed Queen Mother.

At exactly 12:55 p.m., the crowd erupted as the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, made his grand appearance. Gun salutes filled the air as chiefs led the way before the King, who was carried majestically in his palanquin. His entry drew emotional reactions, with some onlookers openly expressing their joy at seeing him for the first time.

Unlike Monday’s rituals, where traditional priests and priestesses performed purification rites, Tuesday was marked by cultural troupes showcasing dance and music. The day’s observances also saw representatives of the judiciary, Ghana Bar Association, security services, state institutions, and financial bodies joining the general public to pay their respects.

The funeral continues through the week, with more ceremonies expected to highlight the enduring cultural pride of Asanteman and the reverence accorded to its late Queen Mother.
