Stanbic Bank Boosts KNUST SONSOL Project With 50 Laptops

Stanbic Bank Ghana has strengthened its partnership with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) by donating 50 high-end laptops under the Support One Student with One Laptop (SONSOL) initiative.

The presentation took place at the Office of the Vice-Chancellor of KNUST on Thursday, April 30.

The Chief Executive Officer of Stanbic Bank Ghana, Kwamina Asomaning, said the initiative forms part of the bank’s commitment to empowering young people and driving digital inclusion across the country.

He noted that Africa’s future depends on its youthful population, adding that Stanbic Bank continues to support initiatives that equip students with the tools needed for academic and professional success.

According to him, the bank has so far donated 400 laptops under the SONSOL project, aimed at enhancing students’ access to digital learning resources.

He stressed that digital equity remains crucial in today’s world, as it ensures fair access to education, employment, entrepreneurship, and civic participation.

Mr. Asomaning further observed that women are often underrepresented in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), and announced that 40 out of the 50 laptops donated would go to female students pursuing STEM programmes at KNUST.

Receiving the items, the Vice-Chancellor of KNUST, Professor (Mrs.) Rita Akosua Dickson, expressed gratitude to Stanbic Bank for its continuous support over the years.

She said the university aligned fully with the bank’s vision and recalled how the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 exposed gaps in students’ access to digital learning tools.

According to her, while KNUST invested heavily in e-learning infrastructure, some students were unable to fully participate due to lack of appropriate devices, making partnerships like SONSOL very critical.

She commended Stanbic Bank for consistently supporting the university over the past five years, noting that the bank has never failed to respond to KNUST’s call for assistance.

Professor Dickson also praised the bank’s focus on supporting female students, describing it as key to bridging gender gaps in STEM education.

She said the initiative goes beyond providing laptops, as it is helping to transform lives and improve the future prospects of students.

The Vice-Chancellor further highlighted KNUST’s STEM for Girls policy and reaffirmed the university’s commitment to training globally competitive, market-ready graduates.

She added that the partnership between KNUST and Stanbic Bank continues to play a vital role in nurturing young talent for national and global development.
