Nursing Student Robber Sentenced to 15 Years
The Bekwai Circuit Court has sentenced a 26-year-old shoemaker, Thomas Opoku, alias Akwesi Dekye, to 15 years’ imprisonment for robbing a nursing student at gunpoint at Kokofu Bedomase in the Bekwai Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
The sentence was handed down by the presiding judge, His Honour Isaac Apietu, after the court found Opoku guilty of conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery, contrary to Sections 23(1), 149 and 149 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
His alleged accomplice, identified as Agye Nyame, is currently on the run, with police intensifying efforts to apprehend him.
According to the prosecution, the complainant, Divine Adu Boahen, a first-year student of the Kokofu Nursing Training School, left the school campus at about 12:15 a.m. on June 12, 2026, to collect a list of students travelling to the Atwea Mountains.
The court heard that while returning from Bedomase to the school campus, the two men emerged from a nearby bush armed with a single-barrel gun and cutlasses. They threatened the student and demanded his valuables.
Fearing for his safety, the complainant surrendered his Infinix Smart 6 mobile phone valued at GH¢1,400. The robbers also allegedly searched his pockets and made away with GH¢400 in cash before fleeing into a nearby bush.
The incident was reported to the Kokofu Police, who launched investigations.
Police later arrested Thomas Opoku at the Kokofu lorry station after the complainant identified him. A search conducted on the suspect led to the recovery of the stolen mobile phone, which was positively identified by the complainant.
During investigations, Opoku admitted his involvement in the robbery in his caution statement, according to the prosecution.
After considering the evidence before the court, His Honour Isaac Apietu convicted the accused and sentenced him to 15 years’ imprisonment.
Meanwhile, police say investigations are ongoing to arrest the second suspect, Agye Nyame, who remains at large, to face prosecution.
