Arsenal Thrash Coventry 3-0 To Begin Title Defence

Defending Premier League champions Arsenal began their title defence in emphatic fashion, thrashing newly promoted Coventry City 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium in the opening game of the 2026/27 season.

The Gunners took control from the onset and were rewarded in the 15th minute when German forward Kai Havertz opened the scoring with a composed finish after Riccardo Calafiori set him up.

Arsenal doubled their advantage eight minutes later through Bukayo Saka, who pounced from close range to make it 2-0 before the break.

Coventry, making their return to the Premier League after 25 years, struggled to cope with the champions’ intensity and attacking quality.

Captain Martin Ødegaard put the result beyond doubt four minutes into the second half, scoring Arsenal’s third goal after the hosts continued to dominate proceedings.

Arsenal’s new signing Christos Tzolis also impressed on his Premier League debut, playing a key role in the build-up to the first two goals and posing a constant threat down the left flank.

The victory marked a perfect start to Arsenal’s campaign as they seek to retain the Premier League title and establish themselves as the dominant force in English football.

Manager Mikel Arteta will be delighted with the commanding display, while Coventry manager Frank Lampard will be hoping his side can quickly recover from the heavy defeat as they adjust to life back in the top flight.

Arsenal’s three-goal victory also sent an early warning to their title rivals that the champions are determined to defend their crown in style.
