Court Remands NPP’s Abronye Over False News, Offensive Conduct

An Accra Circuit Court has remanded Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye, into prison custody.

He was arraigned on Friday, September 12, on charges of offensive conduct conducive to the breach of public peace and publication of false news. The case was filed by the Ghana Police Service. Abronye is scheduled to reappear in court on Thursday, September 19, 2025.

In a statement released on Monday, September 8, the Police Service confirmed that the outspoken politician had been arrested the previous week and kept in custody ahead of his court appearance. The Police, however, did not disclose the specific conduct that led to his arrest.

Abronye, well known for his hard-hitting political commentary, has in the past drawn public attention for controversial statements. He has also filed asylum applications in eight countries — the United States, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Canada, Spain, Germany, and Côte d’Ivoire — claiming political persecution and threats to his life.

As part of ongoing investigations, police officers on Sunday searched the residence of former NPP Youth Organiser, Moses Abor, but Abronye was not found there.

The case has since sparked widespread discussion, given Abronye’s prominence within the ruling party and his outspoken political stance.
