LPG Urges Gov’t To Open Saglemi Homes To Flood Victims

The Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) has appealed to the government to immediately open completed and habitable housing units at the Saglemi Housing Project to victims displaced by the recent floods.

The party said the move would provide urgent relief to thousands of affected families who are currently taking shelter in schools, churches and other temporary accommodation following the devastating floods.

In a statement signed by its General Secretary, Jerry Owusu Appauh, the LPG described the situation as unacceptable, insisting that completed housing units funded by taxpayers should not remain vacant while flood victims continue to suffer.

“The NDC government campaigned on promises of putting the Ghanaian people first. This is the moment to prove it. Compassion is measured by action, not speeches,” the statement noted.

The party urged the government to conduct an immediate assessment of all completed and habitable units at the Saglemi Housing Project and allocate them to families who have lost their homes.

According to the LPG, leaving completed public housing unoccupied in the midst of a humanitarian crisis cannot be justified.

The statement also linked Ghana’s perennial flooding to poor urban planning, weak enforcement of building regulations and inadequate investment in drainage infrastructure.

It called on the government to move beyond emergency responses and implement long-term measures to address the root causes of flooding across the country.

The LPG further urged President John Dramani Mahama and the relevant state agencies to act without delay, stressing that prompt action would help restore hope and dignity to affected families.

The party concluded by calling for urgent, compassionate and practical interventions to support flood victims while pursuing lasting solutions to Ghana’s recurring flood disasters.
