Tricycle Tracker Foils Theft, 19-Year-Old Convicted

A tracking device installed on a stolen tricycle has led to the arrest and conviction of a 19-year-old farm labourer by the Nsuta Circuit Court in the Sekyere Central District of the Ashanti Region.
The convict, Baba Alhassan, a resident of Mampong, was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment with hard labour after pleading guilty to stealing the tricycle. The sentence was handed down by the presiding judge, His Lordship Simon Nketiah Gagah, on Wednesday, July 8, 2026.
The court also directed the prosecution to release the recovered tricycle to its rightful owner after it was successfully traced through its tracking device.
Two other suspects, identified as Jalilu and Kwaku, who allegedly aided in the theft, remain on the run. Police say efforts are underway to apprehend them.
Presenting the facts before the court, Detective Chief Inspector Peter Kantoreje said the complainant, Asare Bismark, 22, a tricycle rider residing at Adweeho in Mampong, parked his red tricycle, bearing registration number M-26-AP 347, behind his house at about 11:45 p.m. on June 24, 2026.
He said the complainant discovered the following morning that the tricycle had been stolen and immediately informed its owner.
The owner activated the vehicle’s tracking system, which traced it to Deema, near Takyimantia in the Ahafo Region, where it was found parked by the roadside.
Swiftnews3 gathers that the complainant and the owner laid an ambush at the location. Moments later, Baba Alhassan arrived and attempted to ride away with the tricycle but was arrested on the spot.
He was escorted together with the recovered tricycle to the Takyimantia Police Station before being transferred to the Mampong Police Station for further investigations.
During investigations, Baba Alhassan admitted the offence in his cautioned statement and confessed that he committed the theft with two accomplices, Jalilu and Kwaku, who are still at large.
He further disclosed that the tricycle was stolen at about 3:00 a.m. on June 25, 2026.
After considering his plea of guilty and the facts presented by the prosecution, the court convicted Baba Alhassan and sentenced him to 18 months’ imprisonment with hard labour. Police have since intensified efforts to arrest the two remaining suspects to assist with instigations.
