LPG Warns NDC Against Weakening Electoral Institutions

The Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) has cautioned the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) against what it describes as actions capable of weakening the country’s key electoral institutions and undermining Ghana’s democratic process.

The warning was contained in a press statement dated June 18, 2026, and signed by the party’s General Secretary, Jerry Owusu Appauh.

According to the LPG, developments since President John Dramani Mahama assumed office have raised concerns about the independence and effectiveness of institutions responsible for safeguarding Ghana’s electoral system.

The party specifically pointed to the alleged sidelining of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC), describing it as a critical platform that has over the years promoted dialogue, transparency and consensus-building between political parties and the Electoral Commission (EC).

It argued that any move to render IPAC ineffective could erode trust among political actors and weaken stakeholder participation in electoral governance.

The statement also expressed concern over reports that the Electoral Commission is facing financial constraints due to inadequate budgetary support, warning that such a situation could affect the Commission’s ability to organise credible elections, maintain electoral infrastructure and perform its constitutional responsibilities independently.

The LPG further cited the recent resignation of the EC’s Deputy Chairperson in charge of Corporate Services, Dr. Bossman Asare, as another development that has heightened public concern about the state of the Commission.

Although government officials have indicated that Dr. Asare resigned to return to academia, the party said his exit comes at a time when the Electoral Commission is grappling with significant challenges.

The Liberal Party stressed that Ghana’s democracy depends on strong, transparent and independent institutions. It therefore urged the government to protect and strengthen the Electoral Commission and other democratic bodies rather than weaken them.

The party also appealed to the NDC administration to refrain from actions that could heighten political tension or diminish public confidence in the country’s electoral system, insisting that preserving the integrity of Ghana’s democracy remains a collective responsibility.
