The highly anticipated Group A clash produced plenty of excitement and controversy, with three players receiving red cards in a dramatic encounter watched by thousands of fans.

The hosts continued to control proceedings, with Erik Lira dictating play from midfield while Roberto Alvarado posed a constant threat to the South African defence.
South Africa’s hopes of staging a comeback suffered a major setback in the second half when midfielder Sphephelo Sithole was shown a straight red card, reducing Bafana Bafana to 10 men.
Mexico took full advantage of their numerical superiority, with veteran striker Raúl Jiménez doubling the lead in the 66th minute with a well-taken header to put the result beyond doubt.
The drama was far from over as South Africa were reduced to nine men after substitute Themba Zwane was also sent off following a VAR review. Mexico defender César Montes later received a red card in stoppage time, bringing the total number of dismissals in the match to three.
At the final whistle, Mexico emerged deserved 2-0 winners to claim the first three points of the tournament and move to the top of Group A.
Quiñones, Lira and Alvarado were among Mexico’s standout performers as the tournament co-hosts made a strong statement of intent in their quest for World Cup glory.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is being hosted jointly by Mexico, United States and Canada, marking the first time three nations have co-hosted the prestigious tournament.
