KATH Doctors Suspend Strike After Otumfuo’s Intervention

Doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) have suspended their industrial action following what they described as fruitful engagements and the timely intervention of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

In a press release issued on June 9, 2026, the Komfo Anokye Doctors’ Association (KADA) announced that the strike would be suspended effective 6:00 p.m. on the same day.

According to the association, the decision followed discussions involving the hospital’s Board, Management and other key stakeholders who have shown commitment towards addressing the concerns that triggered the industrial action.

KADA indicated that although it remains determined to ensure that the issues that led to the strike are fully resolved, it carefully considered the potential impact of a prolonged action on patient care and public health before taking the decision.

“The safety and well-being of patients and the broader public interest remain central to our responsibilities,” the association stated, adding that the suspension would allow room for continued dialogue aimed at reaching an amicable resolution.

The doctors expressed profound gratitude to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Hospital Board, Management and all stakeholders for facilitating discussions and helping chart a path towards resolving the outstanding issues.

The association also acknowledged the support and intervention of the National Executive Council and members of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), describing their contribution as invaluable throughout the period of the strike.

KADA further extended appreciation to several healthcare professional groups, including the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), Emergency Medicine Society of Ghana (EmSOG), Orthopaedic Association of Ghana (OAG), Health Services Workers’ Union (HSWU), Komfo Anokye Certified Registered Anaesthetist Association (KACRA), Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS-KATH Chapter), and the Komfo Anokye Pharmacists Association (KAPA) for their solidarity.

The statement, signed by KADA Chairman, Dr. Michael Leat, thanked doctors and other health workers for their support and reaffirmed the association’s commitment to continued engagement with stakeholders to address the outstanding concerns.

The suspension of the strike is expected to bring relief to patients and restore normal medical services at the country’s second-largest referral hospital.
