Sand Offloading Ends In Fatal Electrocution

A routine sand offloading exercise ended in tragedy at Bokankye in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District of the Ashanti Region after a tipper truck driver and his mate were electrocuted.
The two victims, whose identities were yet to be confirmed as of press time, were operating a sand-haulage truck with registration number GR 483-24 when the incident occurred on Wednesday, June 10, 2026.
Confirming the incident to SWIFTNEWS3, the Assembly Member for the Owabi Electoral Area, Hon. Osei Kwame Malik, disclosed that the truck’s raised bucket accidentally came into contact with a high-tension electricity cable belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
According to him, the driver was the first to suffer an electric shock after the bucket touched the live power line.
“The men were offloading sand when the bucket of the truck came into contact with the high-tension cable. The driver screamed, prompting his mate to rush to his aid by attempting to open the truck door, but he was electrocuted instantly,” Hon. Malik explained.
He said the driver was subsequently rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
The bodies of the deceased have since been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) mortuary for preservation and identification.
Police have launched investigations into the incident.
Meanwhile, Hon. Malik has called on operators of tipper trucks and other heavy-duty equipment to be extra vigilant when working near electricity installations.
He noted that his office would collaborate with ECG to intensify public education on electrical safety to help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the Bokankye community, with residents expressing concern over the dangers posed by working close to high-tension powe lines.
