Asokore Mampong Assembly Moves to Demolish Illegal Structures Along Aboabo Drain

The Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly in the Ashanti Region has rolled out a fresh demolition exercise targeting dozens of unauthorized structures along the Aboabo storm drain, as part of efforts to curb perennial flooding in the municipality.
Many of the buildings, authorities say, were illegally constructed on waterways and have long contributed to flooding that destroys property and threatens lives whenever heavy rains set in.
Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr. Ben Abdallah Alhassan, after supervising part of the exercise, disclosed that affected property owners had been served with a final notice.
“We have extended a grace period of one week for those concerned to remove the structures themselves. If they fail to comply, the Assembly will be left with no choice but to return with reinforced equipment to complete the demolition at their expense,” he cautioned.
The MCE stressed that the Assembly’s resolve goes beyond the current operation, describing the move as part of a broader strategy to instill order in the municipality’s physical planning system.
“Illegal construction along storm drains is not only unlawful but also dangerous. Our mandate is to protect lives and property, and we will continue to clear such developments until discipline is restored in our planning process,” he remarked.
Officials explained that with the rainy season intensifying, clearing waterways of encroachments is a vital step to minimize flood disasters in vulnerable communities.
