Ashanti NPP Raises Alarm Over Baffour Awuah’s EOCO Detention

The Ashanti Regional Secretariat of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has criticised the overnight detention of the Manhyia South Member of Parliament, Lawyer Baffour Awuah, by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
The party described the detention as “needless” and an affront to the rule of law, while also raising concerns over the reported GH¢50 million bail condition imposed on the MP.
In a statement issued on Friday, October 2, 2026, and signed by the Regional Secretary, Dr Francis Adomako, the NPP expressed concern about what it described as the manner in which EOCO was handling the case involving the lawmaker.
The party said although it recognised EOCO’s legal mandate to investigate suspected economic and organised crimes, such investigations must be conducted within constitutional limits and in accordance with the principles of natural justice.
According to the NPP, Lawyer Baffour Awuah voluntarily presented himself after being informed by the Deputy Attorney General that an arrest warrant had been issued for him.
The party said it was therefore troubling that the MP was allegedly subjected to treatment intended to humiliate him and demean the office he occupies.
“While his legal team works tirelessly to satisfy the onerous bail conditions and secure his release today, we serve notice to President John Dramani Mahama that the path his appointees in state agencies are charting is dangerous for our democracy,” the statement said.
The Ashanti Regional NPP also cautioned President Mahama to be mindful of the manner in which state power was being exercised against political opponents.
It argued that political power was transient and warned that using state institutions to intimidate political opponents could threaten national cohesion and set a dangerous precedent.
The party subsequently called on Civil Society Organisations, the clergy, the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) and other stakeholders to take an interest in what it described as the direction being charted by the government.
It urged the stakeholders to speak out and call the President and his appointees to order before the situation escalated political tensions in the country.
