Fear Grips Soko Over Dangerous Electricity Poles, Water Crisis

Residents of Soko in the Afigya Kwabre North District of the Ashanti Region are calling for urgent intervention over worsening conditions in the community, including dangerous termite-infested electricity poles, poor school infrastructure and an ongoing water shortage crisis.

According to the residents, several electricity poles in the area have been badly weakened by termites and could collapse at any moment, posing a serious threat to lives and property.

The situation has reportedly affected street lighting in parts of the community, especially around the new site area, leaving roads in darkness at night. Residents say the poor lighting has increased insecurity and exposed motorists, traders and schoolchildren to danger.

Community members also raised concerns about the poor condition of the local school building. They disclosed that due to inadequate classrooms and deteriorating structures, some classes have been merged, resulting in overcrowding and an uncomfortable learning environment for pupils.

Teachers say the congestion in classrooms is affecting effective teaching and learning, making it difficult for both teachers and students to perform effectively.

Residents further lamented the lack of access to clean water in the community, indicating that many households travel long distances daily in search of water for domestic use.

Speaking to the media, Committee Chairman Nana Yaw said several appeals had been made to the Afigya Kwabre North District Assembly, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Ghana Education Service (GES), but the challenges remain unresolved.

He appealed to the relevant authorities to immediately address the situation before it leads to a major disaster in the community.
