CAF CONFEDERATION CUP: Kotoko Edge Kwara United in Seven-Goal Thriller

The Accra Sports Stadium came alive on Sunday, September 20, 2025, as Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko defeated Nigeria’s Kwara United 4–3 in a captivating CAF Confederation Cup first-leg clash.

The Porcupine Warriors started on a bright note, taking the lead in the 14th minute through Emmanuel Antwi, who finished off a well-orchestrated move. Kotoko doubled their advantage on the stroke of halftime when Albert Amoah unleashed a thunderbolt strike that left the Nigerian goalkeeper rooted to the spot.

But Kwara United roared back before the break, courtesy of their danger man Johnmark Atule. He reduced the deficit in the 34th minute before completing his brace in first-half stoppage time to level matters at 2–2 heading into the interval.

Kotoko resumed the second half with intent and quickly reclaimed the lead. In the 47th minute, Joseph Ablorh capitalized on a defensive slip to make it 3–2. Amoah then grabbed his second of the night, expertly converting a 73rd-minute penalty to give the hosts a two-goal cushion.

The Nigerians, however, refused to back down. Their dominance in midfield paid off late in the game when Shola Abdulrahee struck a stunning goal in the 85th minute to narrow the scoreline. Despite a late surge from Kwara United, Kotoko’s defense held firm to secure a narrow but vital 4–3 win.

Speaking after the game, Kotoko’s head coach Abdul Karim Zito praised his side’s resilience but admitted defensive frailties remain a concern. “We showed great character, but conceding three goals at home is worrying. We must be more disciplined in Nigeria if we want to qualify,” he said.

Kwara United’s head coach, Tunde Salihu, expressed confidence his team can turn the tie around in Ilorin. “We matched Kotoko in every department and created chances. With our fans behind us in Nigeria, I believe we can overturn this result,” Salihu told reporters.

The victory gives Kotoko a slender advantage heading into the decisive second leg, where they must avoid defeat to progress. With both sides showcasing attacking flair and vulnerability in defense, fans can expect another thrilling encounter in Ilorin.
