Tricycle Rider Caged for Stealing Diesel

A 45-year-old tricycle rider, Asamoah Gyan, has been sentenced to three years imprisonment by the Abuakwa Circuit Court in the Atwima Nwabiagya Municipality of the Ashanti Region for stealing diesel.

Gyan was found guilty of siphoning three jerrycans of diesel from a truck belonging to Asanko Gold Mines at Bonteso in the Ashanti Region.

The court heard that Gyan’s actions were discovered by the complainant, Akwasi Martin, who caught him red-handed siphoning fuel from the truck. According to the prosecution, Gyan quickly called his accomplice, Kwadwo Bismark, who rushed to the scene with a cutlass and attempted to attack Martin.

In the heat of the confrontation, Martin, who was also carrying a knife, stabbed Bismark in self-defense. Bismark sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment at a hospital.

Martin later reported the case to the police, leading to Gyan’s arrest. However, Martin was also detained for his role in the stabbing incident.

Both Gyan and Martin appeared before the Abuakwa Circuit Court on Thursday, August 1, 2025.

Chief Inspector Ntim, who led the prosecution, presented evidence that confirmed Gyan’s involvement in the theft. Gyan pleaded guilty to stealing, contrary to Section 124(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, Act 29/60, and was sentenced by His Honor Jeffta Appau to three years in prison.

Martin, on the other hand, pleaded not guilty to a charge related to the stabbing. He was granted bail of GHS 2,000 with one surety and is expected to reappear in court on September 12, 2025.

The court also ordered that Kwadwo Bismark, once discharged from the hospital, be arraigned to face charges for his role in the attempted attack.
