Two Jailed Over Brent Energy Filling Station Robbery
The Bekwai Circuit Court, presided over by His Honour Isaac Apietu, has sentenced two men to lengthy prison terms for their involvement in a violent armed robbery at the Brent Energy Filling Station at New Edubiase in the Ashanti Region.
The convicts, Kwadwo Baffoe, 38, and Kwame Affisah, 36, were found guilty on charges including conspiracy to commit robbery and two counts of robbery under the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
Prosecutor ASP Lloyd Baidoo told the court that on August 17, 2024, at about 1:30 a.m., the two, together with accomplices now at large, attacked the filling station armed with pump-action guns.
They reportedly tied up fuel attendants and occupants, forced entry into the manager’s office after damaging doors and a safe, and made away with GH¢2,500 in cash as well as mobile phones and other valuables belonging to staff.
The robbers also caused extensive property damage, including a money safe valued at GH¢6,000 and several doors worth over GH¢7,000 in total.
Police investigations led to the arrest of Baffoe in the Eastern Region on October 18, 2024, where he was linked to another robbery case and later admitted his role in the Brent Energy incident during interrogation.
Further investigations revealed that Affisah was already serving a seven-year sentence at the Kumasi Central Prison for a separate stealing conviction. He was brought before the Bekwai Circuit Court on a warrant and also confessed to his involvement.
Delivering judgment, His Honour Apietu convicted Baffoe of conspiracy and two counts of robbery, while convicting Affisah of conspiracy, unlawful entry and two counts of robbery, with partial acquittals on other charges.
The court sentenced Baffoe to 20 years on each robbery count, while Affisah received 30 years on each count. The sentences are to run concurrently.
Both convicts have been returned to the Kumasi Central Prison to continue serving their respective sentences.
