Atwima Kwanwoma NDC Polls Rocked by Rigging Allegations

The just-ended National Democratic Congress (NDC) constituency executive elections in Atwima Kwanwoma have come under scrutiny following allegations of electoral irregularities, with a former constituency Communications Officer, Murtallah Mohammed, demanding an independent investigation into the conduct of the polls.

Mr Mohammed has questioned the credibility of the election, describing the outcome as a possible “stolen verdict” and accusing the Electoral Committee of failing to ensure transparency in the handling of the voters’ register.

In a strongly worded statement, he alleged that more than 700 questionable names appeared in the voters’ album without proper scrutiny and validation before the elections.

He also questioned the alleged failure to exhibit and validate the voters’ album ahead of the polls, as well as what he described as the late and selective release of the register.

The elections, held at the Twedie Technical Institute on Saturday, October 24, 2026, saw 63 aspirants contesting 29 executive positions in the constituency.

About 2,160 delegates were expected to participate in the exercise to elect new executives to manage the affairs of the party ahead of the 2028 general election.

However, the electoral process reportedly encountered disagreements over the voters’ register, with allegations that about 700 delegates had been removed from the album, triggering concerns among some party stakeholders.

Mr Mohammed, who admitted that allowing the elections to proceed without demanding a comprehensive review of the voters’ register was a mistake, said the exercise should have been suspended until all the concerns were addressed.

He maintained that the alleged irregularities, if established, could undermine confidence in the outcome of the elections and the party’s internal democratic processes.

He consequently called for transparency, accountability and an independent investigation into the allegations, insisting that anyone found culpable must face appropriate sanctions.

“We are not opposed to elections. We are opposed to any process that compromises the credibility of an election,” he stressed.

The former communications officer further argued that the credibility of an election should not be measured solely by the declaration of winners but by the transparency, fairness and integrity of the entire process.

He warned that failure to address the concerns could deepen divisions within the constituency and undermine efforts to unite the party ahead of the 2028 general election.

The allegations have not been independently verified. The response of the constituency Electoral Committee and other relevant party authorities is yet to be established.
