Two Shot As Galamsey Rival Groups Clash At Behenase

Two persons are currently receiving treatment at the Holy Family Hospital at Nkawkaw after sustaining gunshot wounds during a violent clash between rival groups engaged in illegal mining at Behenase, near Awiregya, in the Kwahu West Municipality of the Eastern Region.

The incident has reportedly created fear and tension among residents of Behenase, following the confrontation between the two groups operating at an illegal mining site in the community.

Reports indicate that the clash turned violent, resulting in two persons sustaining gunshot injuries. One of the victims is said to have suffered serious injuries to his genital area.

The victims were immediately rushed to the Holy Family Hospital at Nkawkaw for emergency medical treatment.

The Assembly Member for the Awiregya Electoral Area, Sampson Tenkoang, who disclosed the incident to the media, described it as disturbing.

He said similar clashes had occurred in the area in the past and appealed to the National Security and other law enforcement agencies to intensify operations in the area and flush out illegal miners.

According to him, illegal mining activities continue to pose a threat to the safety and security of residents, warning that failure to act swiftly could lead to more serious incidents.

The latest clash has therefore renewed concerns over the growing violence and insecurity associated with illegal mining activities in Behenase and surrounding communities.

Meanwhile, Abena Grace, the mother of one of the victims who sustained serious injuries, has appealed for justice.

She recounted the circumstances surrounding the attack and expressed concern over the increasing violence associated with illegal mining.

She called on the authorities to thoroughly investigate the incident, arrest those responsible and ensure that they are brought to justice.
