OTEC FM Report Turns Twin Mum’s Life Around
A heartbreaking story of a teenage mother who was forced to carry her twin babies to school has ended in triumph, following an intervention triggered by a report by OTEC FM journalist, Kwame Agyenim Boateng.
Beatrice Agyei, who was only 17 years old at the time, was a student of Offinso Namon Senior High School (SHS) in 2021 when her plight was brought to public attention.
Beatrice had lost her mother and, with nobody available to take care of her twin babies, she had no option but to carry them to school while pursuing her education.
She would strap the babies to her back, attend classes and nurse them in between lessons, while struggling to cope with her studies and the responsibilities of motherhood.
Her touching story, which was reported by OTEC FM, attracted public sympathy and prompted individuals to come to her aid.
The then Headmistress of Offinso Namon SHS, the school’s Administrative Officer, Mr Appiah Emmanuel, and journalist Kwame Agyenim Boateng subsequently established a support fund for Beatrice.
The initiative attracted contributions from benevolent individuals, with about GH¢60,000 reportedly raised to cater for Beatrice and her twins and improve their living conditions.
FOUNDATION INTERVENES
Beatrice’s fortunes changed significantly after the Heavenly Gift of Joy Foundation, a non-governmental organisation established and solely funded by Mrs Veronica Theresa Casely-Hayford Benson, took up her case.
Moved by the OTEC FM report, Mrs Casely-Hayford Benson personally constructed and fully furnished a one-bedroom apartment for Beatrice and her twins.
She went beyond providing shelter by taking responsibility for the family’s food, healthcare and educational needs until Beatrice completed Senior High School.
FROM SHS TO FASHION SCHOOL
After completing SHS, Beatrice was enrolled in a fashion school by the Foundation, where she underwent training in fashion design and event management.
Five years after the intervention began, Beatrice has successfully completed her training and is now equipped with skills to earn a living and take care of her children.
The young mother, who once had to sit in a classroom with her twins strapped to her back, now has a more stable life and a means of providing for her family.
Her remarkable transformation has become a powerful example of how responsible journalism and timely support can bring hope to people facing difficult circumstances.
For Beatrice and her twins, the journey from uncertainty and hardship to skills, independence and dignity represents a new chapter in their lives.
The intervention by Mrs Veronica Theresa Casely-Hayford Benson and the Heavenly Gift of Joy Foundation has given the family a home, education and an opportunity to build a better future.
