NHIS Bike Thieves Get 2 Years Each

Two young men who allegedly stole a GH¢16,000 motorcycle belonging to the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) at Effiduase have been jailed for two years each.

The convicts, Oppong Stephen, alias Gye Nyame, 25, a trader, and Samuel Owusu Antwi, aka C-Jay, 20, a motor mechanic, both residents of Effiduase, pleaded guilty to stealing.

The Nsuta Circuit Court, presided over by Simon Nketiah Gagah, sentenced them on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.

The court heard how the duo allegedly sneaked to the residence of an NHIS accounts officer and made away with the motorcycle after he had parked it outside his house and gone to bed.

Prosecuting, Inspector Nicholas Amoako said the complainant, Williams Kwarteng Asare, had returned from work on August 29 and parked the unregistered Royal motorcycle belonging to the NHIS in front of his residence, near the police barrier at Effiduase.

He retired to bed, only to wake up the following morning to discover that the motorcycle was gone.

The motorcycle, valued at GH¢16,000, was subsequently reported stolen to the Effiduase Police.

Police surveillance later led to the arrest of Stephen Oppong.

During interrogation, Oppong reportedly confessed to the theft and named Samuel Owusu Antwi as his accomplice.

He also disclosed that the stolen motorcycle had been kept at Samuel’s residence.

Police followed the lead to Juaben, where Samuel was arrested and the motorcycle retrieved.

The prosecution told the court that the two men subsequently took investigators to the scene of the theft and demonstrated how they allegedly removed the motorcycle from the complainant’s residence.

They also made confessional statements in the presence of an independent witness, which were tendered as part of the evidence against them.

After their conviction and sentencing, the court ordered the prosecution to release the recovered motorcycle to the NHIS.
