Two Robbers Jailed Over GH¢2.29m Obuasi Gold Heist

Two armed robbers have been handed a combined 55 years’ imprisonment by the Bekwai Circuit Court for their roles in a daring robbery attack on a gold dealer at Obuasi, with the sentences to run concurrently.
A third suspect, believed to have provided insider information, has been remanded into custody and is expected to reappear before court on April 24, 2026.
Briefing the media, the Ashanti South Regional Police Commander, DCOP Joseph Nyaaba, said the incident occurred on Friday, April 3, 2026, at about 8:00 p.m.
He explained that the victim, Abdul Malik Yahaya, a gold dealer, was attacked while returning home on his Haojue motorbike after work.
According to the police, when the victim got to a section of the Obuasi-Asonkore road, he was deliberately knocked down by a red tricycle (Pragya) carrying two young men.
The victim fell and hit his head against a wall, sustaining injuries, after which the suspects made away with his bag containing gold valued at GH¢1,750,000 and cash of GH¢540,000, bringing the total stolen to GH¢2,290,000.
DCOP Nyaaba disclosed that police intelligence led to the arrest of four suspects on April 8, 2026. They were identified as Rashid Adams alias “Rich Buddy,” Razak Ibrahim alias “Zack,” Godfred Ampadu alias “Akata,” and Dominic Naazie alias “Savage.”
Investigations revealed that Rashid Adams and Godfred Ampadu carried out the robbery using the Pragya.
The police boss indicated that Adams later led investigators to his residence at Obuasi-Akaporiso, where the stolen gold was retrieved from under a cement block in a nearby bush.
A Honda Accord vehicle valued at GH¢200,000, believed to have been purchased with proceeds from the robbery, was also retrieved. Additionally, GH¢33,000 was recovered from Adams’ mobile money account.
Further investigations established that Dominic Naazie, a worker of the victim, provided the robbers with vital information and received GH¢200,000 as his share.
The suspects were arraigned before the Bekwai Circuit Court, presided over by His Honour Isaac Appiatu Eso, on charges of conspiracy to commit robbery, robbery, and aiding and abetment.
Rashid Adams and Godfred Ampadu pleaded guilty and were convicted on their own pleas.
Adams was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment on one count and 30 years on another, while Ampadu received 20 years and 25 years respectively, bringing the total sentence to 55 years’ imprisonment to run concurrently.
Dominic Naazie, who pleaded not guilty, has been remanded into custody pending the continuation of the trial.
DCOP Nyaaba assured the public of the police’s resolve to clamp down on violent crime and urged citizens to collaborate with the police by providing timely and credible information.
