One Dead, Two Injured In Hemang Crash
One person has been confirmed dead while two others sustained injuries following a gory accident involving a Mercedes-Benz 207 vehicle and a tanker at Hemang in the Atwima Kwanwoma District of the Ashanti Region.
The fatal accident, which occurred around 4:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 5, completely destroyed the Mercedes-Benz with registration number AS 675-14.
Eyewitnesses told SWIFTNEWS3 that the two vehicles were descending a hill from opposite directions when the tanker, which was travelling at top speed towards Atwima Bebu, lost one of its tyres and veered off, crashing into the driver’s side of the Mercedes-Benz that was coming from Atwima Darko and heading towards Kumasi.
The impact of the collision was so severe that both vehicles were badly damaged. The engine of the Mercedes-Benz was ripped off, with its battery and seats scattered across the accident scene.
The driver of the Mercedes-Benz died instantly after he was thrown out of the vehicle, landing about 20 metres away from the wreckage. His mate, who sustained injuries, survived the crash.
The driver and mate of the tanker also survived but sustained various degrees of injuries.
All the injured persons have been admitted to the HopeXchange Medical Centre at Santasi where they are receiving treatment, while the body of the deceased has been deposited at the facility’s morgue.
An eyewitness, Nana Antwi, who is also a driver, blamed the accident on excessive speeding by the tanker driver.
According to him, he was following the tanker before the crash and observed that the driver was moving at a dangerously high speed.
“I was following the tanker driver and the speed at which he was travelling was very dangerous. I was not surprised he could not control the vehicle when the incident occurred,” he told SWIFTNEWS3.
He added that he and some residents struggled for some time before they were able to rescue the tanker driver from the wreckage.
When Daily Guide visited the accident scene, debris from both vehicles was scattered around the area. The tanker had already been towed away, while the mangled Mercedes-Benz was still at the scene.
