At least sixteen people are feared dead following a fatal collision between an ambulance and a Ford commercial vehicle at Potrikrom on the Kumasi-Sunyani highway on Tuesday, March 3, 2026.
The ambulance, bearing registration number GB 527-32, was reportedly transporting a seven-month-old baby on oxygen to Kumasi when it crashed into the commercial vehicle under circumstances yet to be fully established.
Eyewitnesses described the impact as severe, leaving the ambulance badly mangled and trapping the driver inside the wreckage. Rescue teams had to cut through the damaged vehicle to free him.
“The ambulance driver was trapped and badly injured. Rescuers had to cut through the vehicle to bring him out,” an eyewitness, Stephen Asare, told SWIFTNEWS3 in a telephone interview.
Survivors of the crash, including the driver, are said to be in critical condition and are receiving treatment at Adugyama Hospital.
The seven-month-old baby, who was on oxygen support at the time of the accident, survived and is currently undergoing treatment.
The accident scene was chaotic, with more than 30 police officers deployed to manage traffic and assist emergency responders.
