Bawumia Clinches NPP Flagbearer Slot with Landslide Victory

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has emerged as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential flagbearer after securing a commanding win in the party’s presidential primary held on Saturday, January 31.
The former Vice President polled 110,643 votes, representing 56.48 percent of total valid votes cast, to decisively beat his contenders and earn the mandate to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.
Kennedy Ohene Agyapong followed in second place with 46,554 votes, accounting for 23.76 percent, while Dr. Bryan Acheampong placed third after securing 36,303 votes, representing 18.53 percent.
Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum finished fourth with 1,999 votes (1.02 percent), and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong came fifth with 402 votes, representing 0.21 percent.
The nationwide primary attracted the participation of more than 211,000 delegates, who voted at 333 polling centres across all 275 constituencies. The exercise was conducted under heavy security presence and close supervision by party officials to guarantee transparency and credibility.
Results from various constituencies, as they were collated, consistently pointed to a clear lead for Dr. Bawumia, underscoring his widespread appeal among party delegates.
Observers and party leaders have commended the conduct of the election, describing it as largely peaceful with only minor incidents reported during the process.
In his victory address, Dr. Bawumia expressed gratitude to delegates for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to lead a united and inclusive campaign. He called on all members of the party, regardless of their preferred candidates during the primaries, to come together and work towards securing victory for the NPP in the next general elections.
