Asante Concerned Youth Demand One of Their Own as NPP Flagbearer

The Asante Concerned Youth (ACY) has declared its unflinching support for two Ashanti natives, contesting the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearership race scheduled for January 31, 2026.

Addressing a press conference at Noks Hotel, Asokwa, in the Ashanti Region on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, the President of ACY, Ebenezer Nyamekye, called on all NPP delegates in the region to rally behind candidates from Ashanti to lead the party.

According to him, history has shown that Ashanti-born leaders have significantly contributed to the development of the region and the country at large, citing the tenure of former President John Agyekum Kufuor as a clear example.

“We all witnessed massive development in the Ashanti Region under the leadership of President John Agyekum Kufuor,” Mr. Nyamekye said. “Projects such as the Asokwa Interchange, Sofoline Interchange, and the Emergency Centre at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, popularly known as the Kufuor Emergency, are clear testimonies.”

He expressed confidence that another leader from the Ashanti Region would serve Ghana diligently and also accelerate development in the region.

Among the five NPP flagbearer aspirants, ACY identified Engineer Kwabena Agyei Agyapong and Dr. Yaw Adutwum as the two Ashanti candidates deserving the support of delegates.

Mr. Nyamekye explained that among the two natives, the group has carefully assessed their track records and is calling on delegates to sort through the candidates, choose the one who truly served the Ashanti people well, and vote for him.

He noted that both men have had the opportunity to serve in government and demonstrated commitment to national and regional development. Engineer Agyapong served as a Press Secretary during the Kufuor administration, while Dr. Adutwum served as Minister for Education under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

“We have seen the contributions both of them made, particularly to the Ashanti Region. It is now up to the delegates to decide who served the people of Ashanti and Ghana better and vote accordingly,” he stated.

The ACY President was quick to clarify that the group is non-partisan and does not belong to any political party, stressing that its support is purely based on regional interest and performance.

“We are not partisans. We support Ashantis wherever they find themselves. If the National Democratic Congress (NDC) also presents an Ashanti candidate, we will equally throw our full support behind that person,” he added.

Mr. Nyamekye dismissed claims of tribalism, explaining that the group’s stance is about supporting capable natives who can deliver results.

“This is not about tribalism; it is about supporting our own. When you compare the performance of President Kufuor to that of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, many Ghanaians will agree that President Kufuor performed better, including the massive electoral support he received in the Ashanti Region,” he argued.

The Asante Concerned Youth expressed optimism that NPP delegates in the region will heed their call and make a decision they believe will be beneficial to both the party and the nation.
