Five Arrested in Anti-Galamsey Crackdown Along Birim River

Five persons, including Chinese nationals, were arrested yesterday during a major operation against illegal mining activities along the Birim River in Ghana’s Eastern Region.

The operation was carried out by the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) as part of sustained efforts to curb galamsey and protect the country’s water bodies from pollution.

During the exercise, officers seized two excavators, a Toyota Hilux pickup, and a Toyota Land Cruiser. Makeshift mining camps, water pumping machines, and other mining equipment found at the site were destroyed.

NAIMOS stated that the operation forms part of a broader strategy to halt environmental degradation caused by illegal mining, particularly the contamination of vital water sources.

Authorities have issued a stern warning that enforcement measures will be intensified and have called on communities to cooperate with security agencies to help clamp down on illegal mining activities across the country.
