Teen Dies in Abandoned Galamsey Pit at Atwima Mponua
A 19-year-old young man has lost his life after falling into an abandoned mining pit at Yaw Nkwanta near Mpasatia in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region.
The victim, identified as Philemon Okofor Ahene, reportedly died on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, at approximately 2:30 p.m.
Information gathered indicates that Philemon had joined two colleagues on a visit to an illegal mining site when the incident occurred. Though the circumstances leading to his death remain uncertain, his body was later retrieved and conveyed to the Frimpong Boateng Mortuary in Toase.
The Toase Police have commenced investigations to unravel the events that resulted in the tragedy.
However, the bereaved family has expressed doubts over the explanations provided by those who were with him, claiming inconsistencies and calling for a thorough probe into what they suspect may involve foul play.
The incident has reignited public concern over the persistent dangers posed by abandoned and unregulated galamsey pits across the country, which continue to threaten lives in mining communities.
