Bagbin Appointed to Mediate in Russia-Ukraine War
The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has been appointed to the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s (IPU) Task Force on the peaceful resolution of the Russia-Ukraine war.
The appointment was conveyed in a letter signed by the Secretary-General of the IPU, Martin Chungong, who praised the Speaker’s integrity, impartiality, and ability to build trust among opposing parties.
According to the IPU, Speaker Bagbin’s vast experience and leadership qualities make him a valuable addition to the eight-member Task Force, whose membership is drawn from all six geopolitical groups of the Union.
“We are confident that your leadership and experience will enhance the work and impact of the Task Force in its mission to support diplomatic efforts in seeking a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine,” the letter read.
Established in March 2022 as an ad-hoc body, the IPU Task Force has been instrumental in fostering dialogue between parliamentarians from Ukraine and the Russian Federation. Since its creation, the body has convened thirteen meetings and undertaken a mission to both Kyiv and Moscow in July 2022.
It also holds regular consultations every six months with parliamentary delegations from both sides during IPU Assemblies, serving as one of the few remaining platforms where Russian and Ukrainian lawmakers still engage in dialogue amid the ongoing conflict.
Speaker Bagbin’s inclusion is expected to inject new momentum into the Task Force’s peace efforts. As part of his duties, he will attend in-person meetings during IPU Assemblies, participate in hearings and discussions with both delegations, and engage directly with government leaders from the two nations to help calm tensions and advance peace efforts.
Mr. Bagbin is widely respected for his experience in mediation and conflict resolution, having participated in several international peace-building efforts during his political career.
The appointment further cements Ghana’s growing reputation as a champion of peace and diplomacy on the global stage.
