Bushy Nyinahin Sports Complex Sparks Concern as Youth Step In

The incomplete Nyinahin Sports Complex has once again come under the spotlight after a group of energetic youth from Nyinahin Kyiraso Junction voluntarily cleared the overgrown weeds that had taken over the abandoned facility.
Their initiative drew praise from the Atwima Mponua District Chief Executive (DCE), Hon. Isshaku Ibrahim, who described the move as a demonstration of selfless commitment to the community. During his visit to the site, the DCE expressed gratitude to the youth and offered a token donation to support their meals as they continued the exercise.
“These young people have shown unwavering dedication and commitment to our community. I am deeply moved by this selfless act, and I am truly grateful,” Hon. Ibrahim remarked, also commending the Assembly Member for the Nyinahin Junction Electoral Area, Hon. Kwabena Karikari, for backing the effort.
He, however, lamented the state of the project, stressing that though it is “95 percent complete on paper,” the reality is far from it. The contractor, he revealed, vacated the site in November 2024 without formally handing it over, leaving terraces swallowed by weeds, an untended pitch, and unfinished internal works.
The DCE further disclosed the absence of water, electricity, and an inner perimeter wall, adding that the facility’s condition poses safety hazards as it risks becoming infested with reptiles and rodents.
Initiated under the erstwhile NPP government by former Sports Minister and former Atwima Mponua MP, Isaac Kwame Asiamah, the Nyinahin Sports Complex was expected to be a major sporting hub. However, its abandonment has raised concerns among residents who had high hopes for the project.
Hon. Ibrahim has therefore appealed to the government, through the Sports and Recreation Minister, Hon. Kofi Adams, to hold the contractor accountable and ensure the facility is completed. He emphasized that if the contractor believed the funds were insufficient, such concerns should be made known rather than allowing taxpayers’ money to go waste.
He added that aside from the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, the Ashanti Region lacks a major government-owned sports facility. According to him, completing the Nyinahin Sports Complex would serve not just the district, but also the Ahafo and Western North Regions, while providing opportunities for the youth to nurture their talents, create employment, and help curb social vices.
