VIDEOS: NADMO Staff Allegedly Drowns in River at Abira
A 60-year-old staff member of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has allegedly drowned in a river at Abira, a farming community in the Kwabre East Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
The deceased, identified as Kwame Obeng, was discovered lifeless in the River Abena Feam on Wednesday morning by community members. His body was later retrieved and conveyed to the morgue, while investigations continue into the cause of death.
According to the Chief of Abira, the late Obeng had informed his wife a day before the incident that he was travelling to Krobo, a neighboring community, though he was uncertain about returning that evening. Tragically, he never made it back home.
“This is not the first time something like this has happened. This marks the second time that a body has been found in this river, and it has left many of us worried,” the chief disclosed in an interview with this reporter.
Residents of the community expressed shock and grief over the sudden demise of the NADMO staff, describing him as a hardworking and approachable man who had dedicated many years of his life to public service.
Some residents also raised concerns about safety around the River Abena Feam, noting that the recurring tragedies call for urgent attention from authorities. They appealed to municipal leaders and NADMO officials to collaborate with traditional authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding such deaths and ensure preventive measures are put in place.
Meanwhile, officials from the Kwabre East NADMO office and the police have reportedly visited the scene and assured the bereaved family of their support. The body of the deceased has been deposited at the morgue for autopsy, which is expected to determine the actual cause of death.
The incident has cast a shadow of sorrow over Abira and its surrounding communities, with many residents still struggling to come to terms with the unexpected loss.
