11- Year Old Boy Drowns In River Owabi

An 11-year-old boy has drowned in the River Owabi at Akropong in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District of the Ashanti Region.

The incident occurred on Monday, October 5, 2026, when the deceased and six other boys reportedly went swimming in the river.

Three of the boys got drowned, but residents who rushed to the scene managed to rescue two of them alive.

Efforts to rescue the third boy, however, proved unsuccessful as he remained trapped under the water.

The Assembly Member for the area, Andrews Kofi Nti, said the boy’s body was eventually found on Tuesday, October 6, after a search operation.

He explained that traditional authorities and security personnel initially went to the river on Monday after receiving information about the incident but could not locate the boy.

“After learning of the incident, traditional authorities in the community, together with security officials, went there, but we could not locate him on Monday,” he said.

According to him, the search resumed the following day after traditional rituals were performed, leading to the discovery of the body.

“Later on Tuesday, we went back and performed the necessary rituals before locating the body,” he added.

The Assembly Member disclosed that the police had since handed the body over to the bereaved family for burial.

The incident has left residents of Akropong shocked, with renewed concerns about children swimming in the river without adequate adult supervision.
