NASTECH To Get Free WiFi As Old Student Pledges Support

Namong Senior High Technical School (NASTECH) in the Offinso South District of the Ashanti Region is set to benefit from free Wi-Fi connectivity, following a pledge by an old student of the school based in the United Kingdom (UK), Mr. Richard Agyare.

The project will be funded by Mr. Agyare with support from his wife, Mrs. Mercy Dombo, as part of their commitment to improving teaching and learning at his alma mater.

Mr. Agyare, known for his philanthropic gestures within the Offinso South Constituency, made the disclosure when he visited the school on Wednesday, September 2, 2026.

He was accompanied by his wife, Mrs. Mercy Dombo, and an entourage and donated Orient ceiling fans and an undisclosed amount of money to the school.

Speaking to the SWIFTNEWS3 after the donation, Mr. Agyare said his decision to support the school was borne out of his personal experience as a former student and his concern about the challenges confronting the institution.

“I was a student here and I know that the school lacked a lot in terms of infrastructure and equipment to help the students in their education,” he said.

According to him, when he left the school in 2001, the institution did not have adequate dormitories, compelling students to participate in the manual construction of a dormitory by carrying blocks and fetching water.

He said his recent visit was therefore intended to enable him to assess the current needs of the school and mobilise support from his fellow old students and other stakeholders.

“I made a decision that whenever I visit Ghana, I will contact people here to find out what the school needs urgently so that I can do something to help, as I have been doing philanthropic work within the constituency,” he stated.

Mr. Agyare said he was particularly disappointed by the condition of the school’s dining hall, describing the environment where students were served meals as unacceptable for a second-cycle technical institution.

“Looking at the dining hall, I was disappointed to see a dining hall like that where they prepare their food. The environment is very disappointing,” he said.

He added that the condition of the facility was inconsistent with the standard expected of a Senior High Technical School, stressing that students deserved a clean and hygienic environment.

Mr. Agyare said he had initially been encouraged by NASTECH’s performance in the National Science and Mathematics Quiz and had expected to see significant improvements in infrastructure when he visited the school.

He noted that apart from some newly constructed classrooms, not much had changed since he left the school in 2001.

“I thought, looking at the way they performed in the National Maths and Science Competition, I would come here to see something that the government has done or other people have come to help to bring the school forward,” he said.

He explained that he had already discussed the school’s needs with some of his old schoolmates and that the first intervention would be the provision of free Wi-Fi.

“Free Wi-Fi is what we are going to tackle first, and once we are done with that, then we will look into the dormitories because that is something that is disheartening,” he said.

Mr. Agyare further disclosed that he would engage members of the NASTECH Old Students Association, as well as his 2001-year group, to mobilise additional support for the school.

He said members of the 2001-year group included highly educated professionals who could contribute ideas and resources towards addressing the challenges facing the school.

He also said his attention was drawn to the school’s achievements after the recent National Science and Mathematics Quiz results, prompting him to share the achievement on social media platforms to encourage his fellow old students to support their alma mater.

HEADMISTRESS APPEALS FOR SUPPORT

The Headmistress of Namong Senior High Technical School, Mrs. Christiana Azumah Asore, expressed gratitude to Mr. Agyare, his wife, Mrs. Mercy Dombo, and the entire team for the donation.

She described the g

esture as exceptional and said it demonstrated Mr. Agyare’s commitment to giving back to the institution that trained him.

“We are so excited because we have one of our past students, Mr. Agyare Richard, and his wife coming to make donations to the school,” she said.

She noted that although the school occasionally received support from old students and other stakeholders, Mr. Agyare’s intervention was particularly significant.

Mrs. Asore, however, appealed for more support, saying the school was confronted with several challenges, including inadequate classroom furniture, a poorly equipped dining hall and the absence of a science laboratory.

She said although the government had been supporting the school, it could not single-handedly address all its needs.

“Government alone cannot cater for all these things, so we are also appealing to philanthropists and other stakeholders, past students and citizens of Namong and its environs who are in the diaspora to come in and help the school,” she appealed.

According to her, the school currently has a student population of more than 3,500, putting significant pressure on its existing facilities.

She said the dining hall could accommodate only about 150 students at a time, forcing students to eat in batches.

The situation, she explained, affected instructional hours because students sometimes had to use portions of their third and fourth lesson periods to access meals.

She therefore appealed to stakeholders to support the construction and expansion of facilities to meet the growing needs of the school.

Mrs. Asore recalled that the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) had previously constructed a sickbay for the school, which was commissioned in 2024, and urged other stakeholders to emulate the gesture.

INSPECTS COMMUNITY PROJECTS

As part of his visit to the constituency, Mr. Agyare, accompanied by his wife, Mrs. Mercy Dombo, also inspected some development projects he had personally undertaken for communities within the Offinso South Constituency.

The projects included an ultra-modern toilet facility he constructed for the Agyeimpra community, an information centre and other development projects undertaken in various communities in the constituency.

The inspection was aimed at assessing the impact of the interventions and identifying other areas where he could contribute to local development.

Mr. Agyare said he remained committed to supporting communities in the constituency and would continue to explore ways of mobilising resources, both personally and through his networks, to address pressing development needs.

He said his support for NASTECH was only the beginning and expressed the hope that other old students, philanthropists and stakeholders would join the effort to transform the school and provide students with a conducive environment for academic and technical training.
