ECG Restores Kumasi Power After Pythons Invade Substation

Electricity Company of Ghana has restored electricity to parts of Kumasi after engineers encountered pythons at a substation in Ahodwo while fixing a fault.

The outage, which hit residents along the Ahodwo–Daban–Dr. Asafo Adjei Road on Wednesday, April 22, was caused by a fault on a distribution feeder.

According to a statement issued on Monday, April 27, engineers from ECG’s Ahinsan District moved quickly to resolve the problem and restore supply to affected customers.

Power was restored to some areas initially, but sections around Cocoa Depot and the Star Sawmill enclave remained without electricity due to a lingering fault.

The situation became complicated when engineers attempting to replace a faulty fuse discovered a python hiding inside the substation, making access risky.

Ahinsan District Engineer, Ing. Kwaku Appiah, said the reptile had taken refuge within the facility, posing a challenge to the repair works.

Attempts by residents to remove the snake failed after it slipped beneath the substation.

Despite the danger, the engineers seized a brief opportunity to replace the fuse and restore power to the remaining affected areas.

The incident was later reported to the Kumasi Zoo, where officials discovered two pythons and eggs at the site. The reptiles were eventually captured later that evening.

ECG’s Ashanti West Regional General Manager, Ing. George Amoah, has urged the public to report outages through official channels to ensure swift response and safety.
