Fans in Kumasi Celebrate as Court Clears Path for Daddy Lumba’s Funeral

Fans of the late highlife legend, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, poured onto the streets of Kumasi on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, in wild celebration following a court ruling that gave the green light for his final funeral rites to proceed on December 6, 2025.
The jubilations followed a decision by the Kumasi High Court, presided over by Her Ladyship Justice Dorinda Smith Arthur, which dismissed an interlocutory injunction filed by Madam Akosua Serwaa, said to be the legally wedded wife of the late musician.
Madam Serwaa had sought to restrain the extended family of Daddy Lumba from organizing or participating in the funeral, claiming she alone had the right to make decisions concerning her husband’s burial arrangements.
Delivering her ruling on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, Justice Smith Arthur held that the applicant failed to provide sufficient legal justification for the injunction and noted that granting such an order would infringe on the customary rights of the deceased’s family under Akan tradition.
“The applicant has not demonstrated any irreparable harm that would result should the funeral proceed. The balance of convenience clearly lies with the respondents, who, under customary law, have a vital role in performing the funeral rites of the deceased,” Justice Smith Arthur stated.
The judgment was met with spontaneous jubilation across the Ashanti regional capital. From Adum to Asafo, Amakom, and Bantama, fans danced and sang along to some of Daddy Lumba’s greatest hits, including Aben Wo Ha and Theresa, hailing the ruling as a victory for unity and tradition.
“This is what we’ve been praying for. Daddy Lumba belongs to all Ghanaians, not just one person. Now we can celebrate his life in peace,” said Kwame Adu Poku, a jubilant fan at Adum.
Members of the Fosu family also expressed appreciation to the court for upholding the customs and laws governing funerals in Ghana. They assured fans that the final rites would be organized with the honor and respect befitting the late music icon.
Born on September 29, 1964, Daddy Lumba rose to become one of Ghana’s most celebrated musicians, with over four decades of contribution to the highlife music scene. His unmatched talent, countless hit songs, and influence on modern Ghanaian music have earned him a revered place in the country’s entertainment history.
With the court case now settled, preparations are underway for the final funeral rites, scheduled to take place in Kumasi on December 6, 2025, where thousands of fans, industry colleagues, and dignitaries are expected to bid a final farewell to the highlife maestro.
