VIDEOS: Police Inspector Gets Life Imprisonment Over The Murder Of Girlfriend

The Kumasi High Court 2, presided over by Her Ladyship Justice Rosemary Baah Tosu, has sentenced Police Inspector Ahmed Twumasi to life imprisonment after finding him guilty of murdering his girlfriend, 26-year-old Victoria Dapaah, popularly known as Maa Adwoa.

The court’s decision, delivered on Thursday, October 24, 2025, closes a dark chapter in a case that shocked the nation and sparked widespread debate about abuse of power and violence against women.

According to the prosecution, Inspector Twumasi, then serving with the Ghana Police Service in Kumasi, used his service pistol to shoot Maa Adwoa several times at close range at Adum on April 20, 2023. The victim reportedly died on the spot from hemorrhagic shock.

The incident, which occurred in broad daylight, left many residents in disbelief as news spread that a serving police officer had committed such a violent act in public.

Throughout the lengthy trial, Twumasi denied being in a romantic relationship with the deceased, dismissing claims that his alleged affair had caused tension between him and his wife, Yaa Afriyie. He also rejected reports that his wife had left home the day before the incident, insisting those stories were false.

Delivering judgment, the presiding judge emphasized that the prosecution had presented compelling evidence proving beyond reasonable doubt that the accused intentionally shot and killed the young woman. The court described the act as “a senseless misuse of state power and a disgrace to the uniform he wore.”

The 5–2 jury verdict brought relief to the family of the late Maa Adwoa, who have endured nearly two years of waiting for justice. Many family members were seen weeping and hugging one another as the verdict was announced.

“We thank God for finally giving us justice,” one relative said outside the courtroom. “Nothing can bring her back, but this shows that justice still works.”

Friends of the deceased remembered her as vibrant, hardworking, and full of dreams, a young woman whose life was tragically cut short.

Civil society groups and gender advocates have praised the ruling as a strong message that no one, regardless of rank or position, is above the law. They also renewed calls for greater protection for women and accountability within the security services.

Meanwhile, the defense counsel has indicated intentions to appeal the decision within the next 30 days.

The case of Inspector Ahmed Twumasi versus the Republic will long be remembered as one of the most shocking examples of personal conflict turning deadly — and a painful reminder of the importance of discipline and emotional restraint among those entrusted with public safety.
