VIDEOS: Six, Including Baby, Hit by Stray Bullets in Kwabenakwa Shooting

What was meant to be a moment of joy turned tragic at Kwabenakwa in the Obuasi East Municipality when six people, including a baby, were hit by stray bullets fired by a man identified as Kofi Cole during a street celebration.

The incident occurred shortly after a court ruling on the Kwabenakwa chieftaincy dispute went in favour of one faction. In their excitement, some members of the victorious family reportedly mounted a tricycle (Pragyia) and paraded through the community while firing gunshots into the air.

Eyewitnesses told reporters that Kofi Cole, believed to be a relative of the winning family, was among those celebrating. His reckless firing allegedly resulted in bullets striking six innocent bystanders, including a months-old baby.

ABN’s Senior Correspondent, Chukwu Joseph, reported that chaos ensued as residents scrambled for safety. The injured victims were quickly rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Speaking to the press, the Assembly Member for Kwabenakwa, Mr. Charles Abu, described the shooting as “a needless and unfortunate act” and confirmed that he assisted in evacuating the wounded.

“I was informed about the gunfire and when I arrived, the victims were already bleeding. We helped transport them to the hospital. This should never have happened,” he lamented.

Police in the area have since commenced investigations to bring those responsible to book, while community leaders are appealing for calm.
