PHOTOS: Albino ‘Ofiri’ Channels Komfo Anokye on Sacred Bodware — Mourners Stunned at Asantehemaa’s Dote Yie

Mourners at the Manhyia Palace were left speechless when an albino man scaled the sacred Bodware during the Dote Yie funeral rites of the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, and performed a startling display people said evoked the great Komfo Anokye’s legendary summons of the Golden Stool.

The Bodware — painted entirely white and reserved for purification rites — is one of the Asante Kingdom’s most hallowed platforms. Custom forbids women from stepping onto it and requires any man who approaches to remove his footwear out of respect for its spiritual purity. Against that backdrop, the sight of the bare-footed man, locally called Ofiri, climbing onto the platform caused an immediate stir.

Eyewitnesses said Ofiri began by lifting his face and one hand to the sky, then steadied himself on a single leg for several long moments. His slow, measured movements and the way he then seated himself cross-legged prompted some observers to whisper that he was re-enacting, in miniature, the dramatic pose associated with Komfo Anokye as he chanted for the appearance of the Golden Stool. “It looked like he was calling something from above,” one mourner said. “People started comparing him to Komfo Anokye.”

Reactions were sharply divided. Some in the crowd watched in awe, interpreting the act as a spiritual performance linked to age-old Asante ritual practice. Others voiced alarm, fearing the man had transgressed strict palace protocols and might have exposed himself to ancestral wrath. An anonymous eyewitness noted that albinos have historically been associated with certain purification roles in local tradition, suggesting that the act may not be viewed as an outright violation by everyone present.

The scene lasted only minutes but quickly became the day’s most talked-about moment, drawing both a swelling crowd and heated conversation among elders, youth and visitors. While some argued the display was a bold, symbolic statement appropriate to a funeral steeped in spiritual ceremony, others warned that sacred spaces must be preserved and protected.

As the funeral rites continued, the incident continued to echo through conversations among mourners — a dramatic, controversial episode that linked contemporary spectacle to one of Asante history’s most potent figures, Komfo Anokye.
