MTN Warns Customers: Protect Your MoMo PIN Against Fraud

MTN Ghana has renewed its caution to mobile money (MoMo) users to be extra vigilant against fraud, stressing that protecting one’s PIN is the single most effective way to secure accounts.
Speaking at the 2025 Media and Stakeholder Forum held at the Lancaster Hotel in Kumasi, MTN Northern Sector General Manager, Mr. Nii Adotey Mingle, said fraudsters are increasingly relying on tricks and manipulation to target unsuspecting customers.
“Your PIN is your shield”
“Your 4-digit PIN is your first and most important line of defense,” Mr. Mingle told participants. “If your PIN remains secure, no one can access your account.”
He explained that fraudsters often use social engineering tactics — deceptive phone calls, fake promotions, or online interactions — to convince people to disclose their details.
“Never share your MoMo PIN through any channel – not text, not WhatsApp, not over the phone,” he cautioned. “Treat your MoMo PIN with the same care as your bank PIN.”
Only one official MTN MoMo number
Mr. Mingle clarified that the only official line MTN uses for MoMo issues is 0244300000. He urged customers to ignore calls or messages from any other number, noting that such contacts are almost always fraudulent attempts.
MTN’s anti-fraud push
The remarks form part of MTN’s wider “Shine Your Eye” anti-fraud campaign, which combines security features, customer education, and a 24/7 fraud support team.
“While MTN continues to enhance the safety of the MoMo platform, customer vigilance is key. By keeping your PIN private, you prevent fraudsters from accessing your account,” Mr. Mingle said.
National stakeholder engagement
The Kumasi forum was one of MTN’s nationwide engagements with the media and key stakeholders, aimed at updating them on security measures, operational challenges, and digital transformation plans.
