VIDEOS: Nyinahin Zongo Fire Leaves Dozens Homeless

A fierce blaze tore through the Nyinahin Zongo community in the Atwima Mponua District during the early hours of Wednesday, August 7, 2025, destroying multiple homes and displacing scores of residents.

The fire is believed to have started around 3:27 a.m. at a residence bearing the digital address AI-0025-2688. According to eyewitnesses, the inferno spread rapidly, engulfing rooms and forcing panicked families to flee with nothing but the clothes on their backs.

Elvis Amono, landlord of the affected house, described the terrifying moment it all began. “One of the tenants called me around 3 a.m., saying she could smell something like burning wires,” he recalled. “We checked everywhere, including the ceiling, but saw nothing. Minutes later, the fire broke out and spread fast. It was like a nightmare.”

Although there were no reported fatalities, the destruction was extensive. What could have been a much larger disaster was contained, thanks to the bravery of neighbours who battled the flames with buckets of water and sand in the absence of immediate fire service response.

Their heroic efforts drew praise from Mr. Simon Bonzeadu, Second-in-Command of the Nyinahin Fire Station, who visited the scene later that morning. While expressing regret over the incident, he applauded the residents’ courage and urged all communities to prioritize electrical safety and report hazards early. “Every second counts,” he warned.

The fire has once again drawn attention to the district’s urgent need for firefighting equipment. Nyinahin currently lacks a functioning fire tender, which significantly delayed the official response.

District Chief Executive, Hon. Issahak Ibrahim, visited affected families to offer solidarity and assess the damage firsthand. Among the victims was Madam Rita Anyanor, a nursing mother who lost everything to the blaze. The DCE expressed his condolences and pledged government support through the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO).

He also made a passionate appeal to the central government to fast-track the procurement of fire tenders, assuring that Atwima Mponua District is on the list of expected beneficiaries. “We can’t afford to face another tragedy like this unprepared,” he said.

Relief efforts are currently underway, with the Assembly and NADMO mobilizing resources to assist the displaced. As Nyinahin Zongo counts its losses, the community stands united—resilient in the face of hardship, and determined to rebuild stronger and safer.
