Mahama Pledges Major Road and Aviation Projects for Ashanti Region

President John Dramani Mahama has outlined an ambitious infrastructure plan aimed at easing congestion, stimulating economic activity, and enhancing Kumasi’s status as a modern urban hub.
During his thank-you tour in the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, the President announced the construction of the Greater Kumasi Bypass, with the first stretch running through Ejisu to connect the Mampong–Techiman road. The move is expected to divert heavy-duty trucks en route to Burkina Faso and Mali from Kumasi’s city center.
“This will ease congestion in Kumasi and restore the city’s urban integrity,” he said.
In addition to the bypass, road reconstruction works have been earmarked for Tepa, Manso, and Adansi West, as part of broader efforts to upgrade the region’s road network.
President Mahama also revealed that contractors are mobilizing to site for the extension of the runway at Kumasi’s Prempeh International Airport, a move that will enable the airport to accommodate larger aircraft and position the city for greater international access.
He further confirmed that the long-awaited Accra–Kumasi Expressway is on track, with visibility and design works underway. The expressway—distinct from the dualisation of the existing Accra-Kumasi road—will feature three lanes in each direction and cut travel distance by 50 kilometers.
“This expressway will improve logistics, facilitate trade, and strengthen national integration,” the President noted.
It will be equipped with rest stops, fuel stations, and safety amenities. The road will also be tolled to help cover construction costs.
On the Boankra Inland Port, Mahama disclosed that the Transport Minister has been tasked to audit the stalled project and report to Cabinet for a decision on its completion.
Touching on the economy, the President acknowledged the toll the recent downturn has taken on Ashanti businesses, particularly due to the banking sector clean-up and the domestic debt exchange programme.
“Ashanti’s vibrant business community suffered the hardest hit,” he stated.
He said his administration’s fiscal discipline and cost-cutting measures have led to positive signs, including falling inflation, a stronger cedi, and more affordable port charges.
“Business confidence is returning, and we are determined to create more jobs for our youth,” he concluded.
The Ashanti leg of President Mahama’s tour is part of a nationwide engagement with citizens following his re-election.
