Bekwai MP Transforms 72-Year-Old Nursery School With Major Rehab

The Member of Parliament for Bekwai Constituency, Hon. Ralph Opoku-Adusei, has funded the renovation and retooling of the Queen Elizabeth II Day Nursery School in Bekwai in the Ashanti Region.

The project, which cost thousands of cedis, was financed by the MP as part of efforts to improve early childhood education in the municipality.

The refurbished facility, originally established in 1954, had been in a deteriorated state for decades, with poor infrastructure, inadequate furniture, and limited teaching and learning materials.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, Hon. Opoku-Adusei, an old pupil of the school, said the intervention was his way of giving back to the institution that helped shape his life.

He noted that the poor condition of the school did not reflect the standard of education children deserve, stressing that quality education must begin with a conducive learning environment.

“As leaders, we must ensure that our children are not made to learn under conditions that do not inspire them. If we get the foundation right, we get the nation right,” he said.

The project included the renovation of classrooms, provision of modern furniture, construction of proper toilet facilities, improvement of the school kitchen, supply of teaching and learning materials, and installation of play equipment.

Hon. Opoku Adusei urged school authorities and the community to maintain the facility to ensure its long-term benefit to future generations.

The Municipal Director of Education for Bekwai, Mrs. Leticia Obeng, commended the MP for the intervention, describing it as timely and impactful.

She said the poor state of the school had long been a concern for the Education Directorate and expressed hope that the improved infrastructure would enhance teaching and learning.

Nana Ama Bemah Ankobea, Bekwai Dwahemaa, who represented Nana Adwoa Pinamang III, the Bekwai Omanhemaa, commended the MP for bringing back life to the school that raised and shaped him.

She noted that the refurbishment should serve as motivation for teachers to teach with passion and happiness, and urged school authorities to cultivate a strong maintenance culture to preserve the facility.

Joseph Obeng, who represented the Bekwai Municipal Chief Executive, Salifu Dalia Issakah, also praised the MP, stating that not all Members of Parliament are able to undertake such impactful interventions to inspire the younger generation.

He emphasised that education remains at the heart of the Assembly’s priorities and assured that the Assembly stands ready to support the Directorate to maintain high standards in education within the municipality.

He further appealed to teachers to wholeheartedly impart knowledge to the children and nurture them positively, stressing that maintenance culture is key and that the facility should not be allowed to deteriorate before seeking support.

The headmistress of the school, Madam Veronica Maanu, in her brief remarks, expressed gratitude to the Bekwai MP and pledged to ensure proper upkeep of the facility to encourage further development initiatives in the school and the constituency.

Mrs. Obeng also appealed to other stakeholders and development partners to support the rehabilitation of other schools in the municipality facing similar challenges.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by traditional leaders, officials of the Bekwai Municipal Assembly, education authorities, teachers, parents, and pupils.
