GJA Ashanti Set To Reward Media Excellence

The Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) is set to reward outstanding journalists and media organisations at the 2026 Ashanti Media Excellence Awards scheduled for Saturday, October 24, in Kumasi.
The ceremony, which is expected to attract prominent personalities from the media, politics and public institutions, will take place at the Longford Event Centre at Odeneho Kwadaso, beginning at 6:00 p.m.
Among the dignitaries expected at the event are the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene; the Director-General of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), Major General Maxwell Obuba Mantey; and the Deputy Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Asokwa, Patricia Appiagyei.
The President of the GJA, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, and the Chairman of the association’s Ashanti Regional branch, Kofi Adu Domfeh, are also expected to grace the occasion.
The awards are aimed at recognising journalists and media organisations whose work demonstrates professionalism, creativity, dedication and commitment to the public interest.
This year’s edition is being held under the theme, “Celebrating Excellence, Championing Credibility: Journalism in the Age of AI.”
The theme highlights the growing influence of artificial intelligence (AI) on journalism and the need for media practitioners to uphold professional standards amid rapid technological advancements in news gathering, production and distribution.
Although AI has become an increasingly useful tool for research, transcription, data analysis and content production, its growing application has also raised concerns about misinformation, fabricated content and the possible erosion of public confidence in the media.
The awards are therefore expected to draw attention to the need for journalists to embrace technological innovation without compromising accuracy, fairness, ethical standards and accountability.
As media organisations adapt to the changing digital landscape, the ceremony will also provide an opportunity to reflect on the importance of independent verification and professional judgement in maintaining credible journalism.
The Ashanti Media Excellence Awards form part of efforts to promote excellence in media practice and encourage journalists to uphold the highest standards of the profession.
Beyond recognising individual and institutional achievements, the event is expected to bring together media practitioners and other stakeholders to reflect on the media’s contribution to public education, accountability and democratic governance.
The participation of government officials, political representatives and institutional leaders is also expected to underscore the importance of constructive engagement between the media and other sectors of society.
The programme is supported by Clearpac, Jofel, Longford Royal Centre and Logeist.
